The Madre de Deus, a huge Portuguese galleon returning from the Indies, was sunk by the English; its cargo included 32 cannons, gold, silver, pearls, diamonds, amber, musk, tapestries, raw canvas, ebony, 400 tons of pepper, 45 tons of cloves, 35 tons of cinnamon, and 3 tons of nutmeg.
