The first sugar produced by slave labor in the West Indies (Americas) was shipped to Europe, just 22 years after Christopher Columbus, during his second voyage, introduced sugarcane to Hispaniola (Haiti and Santo Domingo). Refining the byproducts of sugarcane processing to extract sugar would later produce rum.
