Venice. The printer Aldus Manutius designs a new typeface, similar to handwriting, called “italic,” and begins printing smaller-format books, called “octavo” because the sheet is folded into eighths. Venice grants Manutius a patent for this typeface, but it is inevitably quickly imitated elsewhere.
