The trade of the Republic of Venice was based on goods such as salt (taxation of which provided the bulk of state revenue), grain (Venetian ships served as the hub of the grain trade, transporting it from where it was abundantly produced to where it was in short supply year after year), and textiles (trade in Dutch wool, Flemish cloth made from English wool, and fustian made from linen or cotton from the Levant) in exchange for silver, copper, iron, and gold. Venetian ships were prohibited from unloading in any other Adriatic port except Venice.
