Soon after the year 1000, Venetian merchants, taking advantage of the abundance of timber, became the main maritime operators in the eastern Mediterranean. They felled oak, larch, pine, and fir trees and transported the wood to the East, which was already suffering from centuries of deforestation. They also built ships, which they themselves transported and then sold in the East. All in exchange for gold, silver, iron, hemp, and spices.
