Thomas Alva Edison was so desperate for new words to refer to his inventions (he had 1,093 patents) that he ordered his bookseller to provide him with a copy of the etymological glossary of words of Greek origin. His collaborator, Charles Batchelorin, jokingly signed himself “Yours phonographicarbontelephonically, Batch”.
