Spring 1848

There are 350 volunteer units operating in Italy. The most famous are those (about 3,000) led by Luciano Manara, the hero of Porta Tosa, at the end of the Five Days of Milan, but also the spirited Venetian Crusaders (about 2,000), and the Tuscan volunteers, mostly university students. But there are also groups with more sinister and less idealistic intentions, such as the Bois Gilbert Band and the Anfossi Band.
