Spring 1770

Cooktown, Australia. Captain James Cook is the first European to discover coral reefs. He is sailing off the east coast of Australia when his ship, the Endeavour, runs aground on something, far from the coast and in very deep water. It is a nearly vertical wall of coral, rising from the ocean depths: “A wall of Coral Rock rising all but perpendicular out of the unfathomable Ocean.”
