Messina, half destroyed and largely burned, surrendered to the Bourbons after five days of fierce battle. Around two or three thousand men died, both among the attackers and defenders. Many Messina residents fled into the island’s interior, while the last surviving residents chose to throw themselves into a well rather than surrender.
