Borodino, late afternoon. Desperate efforts to entrench the Russian lines begin. They will continue throughout the night. The bastions known as “Bagration’s Arrows” are hastily constructed, complete with a scarp, counterscarp, and ditch, gabions and fascines, and embrasures for ten cannons (the other guns are exposed).
