Yemen: Anwar al-Awlaki, Al-Qaeda’s No. 3, an American citizen, was killed by a drone strike near Khashef, east of Sanaa, in Yemeni territory. He had been under observation by the CIA for two weeks. The strike also killed Khan, another American network expert, and two other passengers in the same vehicle. Harrier aircraft were in the area in case of emergency, as were helicopters to rescue any downed pilots.
