Operation Cherry Blossoms. In the final stages of the war, the Japanese had planned a biological weapons attack on San Diego for the night of September 22, 1945, to be carried out by releasing bubonic plague from a single plane carried there by a submarine carrier. The attack was intended to be kamikaze and only the first of several, to dissuade the Americans from invading Japanese soil.
