Battle of Monterrey, Mexico. After three days of battle, American General Taylor defeats the Mexicans and captures the city. Taylor’s forces include the Mississippi Rifles Battalion, commanded by Colonel Jefferson Davis (future president of the secessionist Confederate States of America), who was married to Taylor’s daughter for three months before she died of malaria at age 21.
