The Soviet Zond 5 probe, returning from the Moon with its cargo of bacteria, plants, flies, worms, and turtles, reentered the atmosphere with a severe deceleration of 16 g, and the capsule reached temperatures of several thousand degrees. The deceleration would have killed the cosmonauts on board but was not fatal for the animal and plant cargo.
