Richard the Lionheart with his troops descends from Acre to Jaffa and defeats Saladin’s army at Arsuf. Having reached Jerusalem undisturbed, he decides not to take the city and to retreat: the Third Crusade ends with an agreement between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin on free access for pilgrims to Jerusalem; on the way back, Richard the Lionheart is captured by Leopold of Austria (who had been humiliated by the English king in Palestine) who delivers him to Henry VI upon payment of a huge ransom that almost bankrupts the English crown.
