The Great September Comet passes by, reaching magnitude -17 (that’s a lot: the logarithmic scale is inverted, and 0 is Sirius, the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere). It’s visible even in broad daylight near the Sun. It’s the oldest comet, of which a photograph still exists.
