The Sabra and Shatila massacre (مجزرة صبرا وشاتيلا): the massacre, carried out by the Lebanese Phalange, allied with Israel, and the South Lebanon Army, with the complicity of the Israeli army, of between 762 and 3,500 civilians, predominantly Palestinians and Lebanese Shiites. The massacre occurred during the Israeli army’s withdrawal, between 6:00 a.m. on September 16 and 8:00 a.m. on September 18, 1982, in the Sabra neighborhood and the Shatila refugee camp, both located on the western outskirts of Beirut. The troops of Bechir Gemayel, assassinated a few days earlier, entered the neighborhoods of their opponents to settle scores, while the Israeli army was unconcerned about the Phalangists’ vengeful intentions. A human catastrophe ensued.
