Frederick Barbarossa descended once again into Northern Italy, accompanied by a small escort, for a tour of the main cities, starting from Milan, passing through several cities in Lombardy and Emilia (including Modena), and then returning to Milan in the late spring of 1185. After many years of bitter conflict, Milan had become an important interlocutor of the Emperor, who, however, was asked to sacrifice Cremona and refound Crema.
