The Allied and, above all, Venetian victory at the Battle of Lepanto forced the Turks to halt their westward advance, allowing Venice to maintain control of the Ionian islands (Zakynthos and Corfu in particular) and Dalmatia. But Venice’s allies did not want it to grow too strong, and so they prevented the victorious fleet from turning eastward, to the Venetians’ advantage. The Venetians, in fact, obtained peace, but at the cost of losing Cyprus, which was conquered by the Turks.
