Idaho, USA. Micron Technology, Inc. is founded. It is an American manufacturer of computer memory and data storage, including dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), flash memory, and USB flash drives. It is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Micron and Intel jointly created IM Flash Technologies, which produced NAND flash memory. Micron was founded by Ward Parkinson, Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman as a semiconductor design consulting firm. Initial funding was provided by local Idaho businessmen Tom Nicholson, Allen Noble, Rudolph Nelson, and Ron Yanke. It later received funding from Idaho billionaire J.R. Simplot, whose fortune was made in the potato industry. In 1981, the company transitioned from consulting to manufacturing with the completion of its first wafer fabrication facility (“Fab 1”), which produced 64K DRAM chips.
