The Confederate submarine David, a true technological innovation, with a crew of four, manages to seriously damage the battleship New Ironside, but without sinking it. It is clear, however, that a new and terrible threat to Union ships has arisen. Various other Confederate attempts to improve the technology are made in Mobile, with mixed success and several casualties and prototypes lost to the seabed.
