Halloween: Orson Welles broadcasts his version of H.G. Wells’s “War of the Worlds” on CBS radio. The music is interrupted to announce that Princeton astronomers have seen a flash on Mars. Then, a few minutes later, news breaks of a meteorite in New Jersey. Reports from on-site reporters also report seeing Martians emerge from the meteorite and begin massacring the population with death rays.
