October 24, 1917 [Russian Calendar]

October Revolution (Октябрьская революция). In Russia, the soviets seize power (October 24 in the Julian calendar adopted in Russia corresponds to November 6 in the Gregorian calendar). After the overthrow of the monarchy, Russia is convulsed for several months by conflicts between political parties and growing military and economic disintegration, and the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (Bolsheviks), led by Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, Lenin, and Leon Trotsky, decides to take armed action against the weak provisional government of Alexander Fyodorovich Kerensky to assume full power on behalf of the Workers’, Soldiers’, and Peasants’ Soviets.
