Dozens of Chechen terrorists kidnapped 700 people in a Moscow theater, the Dubrovka. The intervention of Russian special forces resulted in the deaths of 39 terrorists, the capture of two, and the deaths of more than 100 hostages due to the sleeping gas used. The terrorists numbered 22 men and 19 women. Before the intervention of Russian forces, the terrorists had killed six hostages. When doctors arrived to treat the civilians suffering from the sleeping gas they had inhaled, they were not trained in its nature, and many died due to the lack of appropriate treatment.
