Fermi’s group, on Via Panisperna, had the seemingly bizarre idea of immersing small silver cylinders under neutron radiation in the goldfish tank filled with water in the former nuns’ convent, slowing down the neutrons and thus making them more likely to be captured by atomic nuclei. The experiment was successful… and the goldfish likely died of cancer.
