India. A group of Indian (from India…) and American climbers attempted to carry six detectors, powered by plutonium batteries, to Nanda Devi, 7,816 meters high, to monitor Chinese atomic explosions. The mission failed due to a blizzard. The climbers left their equipment behind. When they returned, everything was gone. It was never found. A second attempt, which the CIA called a “partial success,” was made in 1967, and a third (complete success) shortly thereafter on Nanda Kot (6,861 meters). This was made public by Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desi in April 1978.
