Japan. Japanese counterintelligence services arrest Russian spy Richard Sorge. Sorge had managed to warn Stalin in advance (to Stalin’s disbelief) of the German invasion of the USSR and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, rather than Siberia as feared. Sorge was hanged on November 7.
