From the Algerian desert, France launched a cat into space. Felicette, a cat, aboard a Veronique rocket, developed from the German V-2 rocket. The flight lasted 15 minutes, reaching an altitude of 157 kilometers. Upon returning to earth, the parachutes opened and the cat returned safe and sound. The electrodes implanted in her brain were used to collect medical information. However, the cat was later euthanized to retrieve the electrodes, which would be subjected to further tests. On October 24, the French launched a second cat (unnamed), but this time the launch went awry.
