Nis, between Belgrade and Istanbul, is recaptured by the Ottoman army. The Habsburg general who governs it, Doxat, surrenders in exchange for safe conduct for himself and his men. Upon returning to Vienna, he is beheaded for cowardice. He had designed, among other things, the mighty walls that protect Belgrade.
