Brothers Etienne and Joseph Montgolpier built a hot air balloon in Paris and flew it first with animals and then, on October 15, 1783, with Etienne Montgolfier aboard, tethered to the ground by a 25-meter cable. A few weeks later, on November 21, Rozier and Laurent flew over Paris free (i.e., without cables).
