The Prussian army, rather than defend its positions on the Rhine and await the approaching Russians, attacked the French and was defeated in the Battle of Jena-Auerstadt. For the next eight months, the Russians were virtually alone in fighting Napoleon in Poland and East Prussia, as the Prussian army no longer existed.
