Volturno. Late afternoon. The Neapolitans abandon their attack and return to Capua. The troops of the unfortunate Ruiz, however, disband and attack the Royal Palace of Caserta, sacking it. Garibaldi intervenes personally with the troops he finds available, including several hundred sharpshooters who have just landed in Naples. The operation ends with 2,000 prisoners.
