A list from the Italian Ministry of the Interior puts 166 fascists summarily executed after liberation in the province of Brescia. Expanding the list to include other Brescians killed elsewhere in Italy, the figure rises to 241. In Novara, 160 fascists were executed; in Vercelli, 135. In Genoa, 713, including 456 civilians, including 71 women. In Turin, 1,138. Subsequent research raises the grim list for Turin to 1,322. No other Italian city surpasses Turin in this ranking. The reason is unclear. Perhaps the reason lies in the brutality of the civil war in the area, with no holds barred on both sides, where sniper activity ultimately exacerbated the victors’ desire for revenge.
