Viazma, Russia. Napoleon’s army, retreating along the main road to Smolensk, forms a nearly continuous column 50 kilometers long. Russian commander Miloradovich attempts to isolate the French rearguard, but the attempt fails. The Russians cannot afford to face Napoleon’s entire army in open battle. This is the only significant clash between the regular Russian army and Napoleon’s troops.
