Archaeologists enter Tutankhamen’s tomb. British archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon are the first men to enter the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen in over 3,000 years. Carter had discovered the entrance to the adolescent pharaoh’s tomb three weeks earlier, hidden among the debris near the excavations of Ramesses VI’s tomb. Tutankhamen’s sealed burial chambers were found miraculously intact, containing a collection of several thousand objects, including a golden sarcophagus containing the boy king’s mummy. Many of these treasures are now housed in the Cairo Museum.
