USSR. The “Galaktika” lunar base project was approved by the government in November 1967. It was to permanently house four to twelve cosmonauts, for periods of up to twelve consecutive months each, on the western edge of the Ocean of Storms. Nine modules with a 52-ton mass would be needed. Various lunar base proposals arose: Galaktika, Kolumb (1968, using a Vulkan rocket – yet to be designed), and Zvezda (1974, using an Energyia rocket). Subsequent studies aimed to use inflatable structures (which then solidify) inside pre-existing lunar craters (already identified by American missions).
