The Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupts, killing 23,000. The eruption of Nevado del Ruiz occurred after sixty-nine years of dormancy. It caught nearby towns unprepared, even though the Colombian government had received warnings to evacuate the area from multiple volcanology organizations when volcanic activity was detected two months earlier. The lahar following the eruption is the phenomenon that causes the most deaths.
