At the surrender of the Third Reich, there were 1,109,400 German prisoners of war, of which 3,635,000 were in British hands, 3,097,000 in American hands, 937,000 in French hands, 3,060,000 in Russian hands, 194,000 in Yugoslavian hands, etc. Less than 0.1% of those in American or British hands perished from starvation or exhaustion. This figure rose to 36% and 41% for those in Russian and Yugoslavian hands, respectively.
