After the Liberation of Milan, thousands of fascists or suspected fascists were killed. Palmiro Togliatti suggested 5,000 to the Soviet ambassador. Carlo Simiani claims 3,400 from April 25 to May 31. Research by Livio Valentini documents 1,856 fascist casualties throughout the civil war, of which 1,325 fell after April 25. Milan represents the second highest figure, after Turin.
