3:00 PM. Battle of Legnano. Teutonic charges continued for several hours without success. The Germans counted the dead, including the imperial standard-bearer. At this point, the city forces reversed the situation with a sudden, coordinated counterattack of infantry, cavalry, and reserve cavalry. The Lombards even approached the emperor. A lance thrust struck him and, although it did not penetrate his armor, struck him to the ground, bruised and stunned. With the fall of Frederick, the battle ended. The Teutonic soldiers scattered and fled. The people of Como all surrendered, while some of the Germans surrendered, others fled, thus falling victim to the treacherous waters of the Ticino River. Frederick, recovering from his fall, managed to escape from the camp and return to Como.
