The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publishes a comprehensive review of the alleged hallucinogenic potential of smoked banana peels and banana juice. The result is that there is no hallucinogenic substance. The urban legend had spread in the United States several years earlier, especially on college campuses, partly due to the fact that smoking bananas (Mellow Yellow) was completely legal. The informal opinion of one of the scientists is that you can probably get high from smoking almost anything, but the harm to your health is almost always greater than the high.
