Palermo. Garibaldi, attempting to move counterclockwise around the city’s defenses, stumbles upon the Bourbon column led by the Swiss Von Mechel, one of the most active Bourbon mercenaries. He then sets his men on the march again in the rain, heading for Corleone, giving the impression of retreat. After a few kilometers, however, he divides his forces: the cannons, wagons, wounded, and picciotti who no longer wish to follow him continue toward Corleone, while the bulk of the troops moves eastward along steep paths and through the woods. Von Mechel’s 3,000 elite hunters fall for the trap and continue toward Corleone. Meanwhile, Garibaldi makes a wide detour and unexpectedly appears in Palermo from the east.
