Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The American Geophysical Union meets. On the final evening, a group of people, including Alan Stern and Bill McKinnon, gather at an Italian pizzeria and spend the night brainstorming ideas for a space mission to Pluto. The technical difficulties are incredible, but that night, with notes on paper towels from the pizzeria, the informal Pluto Underground working group is born. This group will take New Horizons to Pluto in July 2015, and then continue on to the Kuiper Belt bodies.
