Chicago, Republican Convention: In the first runoff, Seward receives 173 votes, Lincoln 102, Chase 49, and Bates 48: Lincoln surprisingly emerges as the only candidate capable of challenging Seward. In the second runoff, Pennsylvania swings to Lincoln’s side, bringing its vote total to 181 to Seward’s 184. In the third runoff, thanks to votes from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, Lincoln reaches 231, just two votes shy of the nomination. Finally, with the transfer of votes from New York and Michigan, Lincoln wins the Republican nomination.
