Upon Magellan’s death, he was succeeded by his second-in-command: Juan Sebastian Elcano, a Basque, who refused to free Henry the Black from slavery, as per Magellan’s will. Henry the Black (aka Enrique of Malacca) then escaped and was never heard from again. He may have been the first man to sail around the world, as he may have been born in the Philippines, even though he was captured by Magellan in Malaysia.
