West Virginia declares secession within the secession. The mountainous regions of the Old Dominion, avowedly pro-Union, vote to secede from Virginia and rejoin the Union. The split will be sealed by the battles of Philippi (June 3), Rich Mountain (July 11), and Carrick’s Ford (July 13).
