Marsala. The Thousand set out for the interior of the island. During the march, they are joined by the Baron of Sant’Anna with his squads of picciotti: a few hundred men in all, but all “mountain dwellers armed to the teeth, with stern faces and eyes like the muzzles of pistols; all these people are led by gentlemen to whom they obey with devotion.” The population remains cold and fearful during this initial phase, so these picciotti are the Thousand’s only Sicilian support, initially.
