Garibaldi and the Thousand landed in Sicily, at Marsala, to a festive welcome from the local population. The Thousand, who actually numbered 1,089 at the time of landing, swelled within a few weeks to over 20,000 soldiers under Garibaldi’s command, thanks to local volunteers who joined the effort, encouraged by the island’s self-proclaimed dictator, Garibaldi.
