Chernobyl, Soviet Union (now Ukraine). Two weeks have passed since the disaster, and the quantity (and variety) of material dumped on reactor number 4 is already frightening. Six thousand tons of material have already been dumped on reactor number 4 at the Vladimir Lenin nuclear power plant, including: gypsum to calm the nuclear fire, boron to capture neutrons and slow the chain reaction, dolomite to release carbon monoxide and calm the fire, and lead to melt and absorb heat. Another 13,000 tons will be dumped by the end of June.
