Brescia. The battle draws to a close. The Austrians, under the command of Marshal Haynau, the hyena of Brescia, number 5,000. By evening, the Austrians break through and enter the city. For three days, the city gates are kept closed and the town is plundered without restraint. A decade later, Brescia will be one of the cities that will provide the most volunteers for Garibaldi’s campaign in Sicily.
